SEVIERVILLE, Tenn. -- The Tennessee Tech men's golf team improved
its team score by nine strokes Tuesday, despite sloppy conditions
during the second round of the Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate at the
Sevierville Golf Course, and jumped a couple of spots in the team
standings for a seventh place finish.
Ohio Valley Conference rival UT Martin won the inaugural event,
named in memory of Tech Sports Hall of Fame player and coach Bobby
Nichols. The Skyhawks shot a two-round team total of 593 for a
10-shot lead over Newberry College and Eastern Kentucky (603).
Newberry claimed second place in the nine-team men's division via a
scorecard decision.
Following Eastern Kentucky were Northern Kentucky (605) and
Evansville (613) to round out the top five. The field also included
Detroit Mercy (617), Tech (621), Northern Iowa (622) and Tennessee
State (632).
The tournament was cut from 54 holes to 36 after storms moved into
the area Monday afternoon.
Golden Eagle freshman Adam Cunningham anchored the squad,
carding a 76-77=153 on the rain-soaked River Course. Close behind
him, senior Greg Kitts shaved four strokes off his opening score on
the second day, finishing with a 79-75=154 while freshman Bryce
Kendrick gained five strokes with an 80-75=155. Freshman Mitch
Thomas chipped in an 80-79=159. Lee Whitehead's 80-80=160 finished
Tech's team scoring.
Individually, senior Lee Maxwell was tied for the individual lead
following Monday's play with a 69, but slipped to an 80 Tuesday to
finish tied for 12th. Maxx Verble was tied for 33rd place
(73-82=155) while Tanner Garland shot a 81-81=162 to tie for 52nd
place.
