Golden Eagles play for fifth OVC Tournament championship this weekend

DICKSON, Tenn. -- The Tennessee Tech men's golf team will tee off at the 2013 Ohio Valley Conference championship tournament on Thursday at the GreyStone Golf Club in Dickson, Tenn. The three-day, 54-hole tournament will crown a winner Saturday from among 11 teams, with the first group slated to swing from the first tee at 8 a.m.

Sophomore Lee Whitehead will start the tournament for the Golden Eagles, with a scheduled tee time of 8:50 a.m. Seniors Lee Maxwell and Greg Kitts follow him, teeing off at 9 and 9:10, respectively. A pair of freshmen, Adam Cunningham and Mitchell Thomas round out the Tech squad, opening play at 9:20 and 9:30. 

For the fourth year in a row, the tournament will be held a GreyStone, a 6,858-yard, par-72 public course.

Following play Thursday, the OVC will hold the annual awards banquet to announce the All-OVC teams. The OVC Player of the Year, Coach of the Year and MVP awards will be annouced at the end of the tournament, scheduled for Saturday.

Tech is coming off of a fifth-place finish at the Tennessee State Big Blue Intercollegiate, April 15-16. 

Thomas leads the Golden Eagles with an average of 76.08, including nine rounds of par or better on the season. Kitts is close behind, averaging 76.46, followed by Maxwell at 77.18, Whitehead at 77.54 and Cunningham at 77.64. 

Thomas also hit the lowest round of the season for Tech with a 66, while Whitehead has the highest finish (4th) at the Grover Page Classic.
