Maxwell leads Golden Eagles at Skyhawk Classic

MARTIN, Tenn. -- Senior Lee Maxwell earned a Top 10 finish and two Golden Eagles tied for 12th place as the Tennessee Tech men's golf team claimed seventh place in the 14-team UT Martin Skyhawk Classic, which wrapped up Tuesday at Paris Landing State Park.

Maxwell finished with a team-best round of 74 Tuesday to finish with a 215 total, placing him in a tie for 10th on the individual leaderboard among 78 golfers. Junior Greg Kitts was one stroke back at 216 in a tie for 12th place, while freshman Adam Cunningham also tied for 12th at 216. Cunningham's scores didn't help the Golden Eagles, however, as he was entered in the field as an individual competitor.

Murray State and John A. Logan College ted for first place with scores of 861 for the 54-hole total, with the Racers breaking the tie and winning the title on the first playoff hole. Lipscomb (863) was in third place, followed by Union University (868), Southern Illinois (872), and the UT Martin "B" squad (872).

The Golden Eagles placed seventh with an 874 total, closing play Tuesday with a 297 round after shooting 284 and 293 on Monday. The UT Martin "A" squad was next (876), followed by Tennessee State and Alabama State (881), Murray State's "B" unit (890), Southern Indiana (897), Jackson State (912) and Bethel (921).

Following Maxwell and Kitts for the Golden Eagles, freshman Mitchell Thomas tied for 31st place at 220, Lee Whitehead was 44th at 225, and Maxx Verble was 61st at 229.

Cunningham was the top finisher among nine individuals. Bryce Kendrick was also among the individuals, finishing 70th with a 233 total.

The Golden Eagles will jump right back into action on Sunday at the WKU/Kenny Perry Invitational at The Club at Olde Stone, Sunday through Tuesay.
