BOWLING GREEN, Ky. -- Freshman Mitch Thomas is tied for 10th on
the individual leaderboard and the Tennessee Tech men's golf team
is tied for seven in the team standings after the first of three
days of play at the Kenny Perry Invitational, being hosted by
Western Kentucky at The Club at Old Stone.
The course wasn't kind to the field Sunday, with an average score
of more than 11-over-par (83.9) over the 60 individual rounds. On
the day, there were 154 scores of double-bogey or higher.
Thomas had one birdie and one double bogey, six bogeys and 10 pars
on 7,372-yard, par 72 layout for a seven-over par 79.
Nobody in the field of 60 players shot under par and only one
managed to shoot par on Sunday. That was Franco Grillo of
Jacksonville State, whose 72 helped the Gamecocks grab the team
lead with a 17-over team score of 305.
Louisville is 10 shots back at 315 for second place while Austin
Peay is in third place at 320, 15 shots behind the leader. Akron
(321) and Charleston Southern (324) round out the Top 5. Morehead
State (330) leads the second five in sixth place while Tech
and Louisiana Monroe (331) are tied for seventh. Eastern Kentucky
(333) is ninth, followed by Belmont and Troy (338). The host team,
Western Kentucky is 12th at 354.
Senior Lee Maxwell had the second-best score of the day for coach
Polk Brown's team, finishing at nine-over 81 to place him in a tie
for 15th place. Adam Cunningham shot an 85 and is tied for 37th
place while Lee Whitehead's 86 has him tied for 42nd place. Junior
Greg Kitts had a tough day, finishing with a 94.
