Cunningham leads Tech; Golden Eagles sixth at Augusta


AUGUSTA, Ga. – Freshman Adam Cunningham tied for sixth place, narrowly missing all-tournament honors, while leading the Tennessee Tech men's golf team to sixth place Saturday in the 10-team, 36-hole Forest Hills Invitational hosted by Augusta State University.

Cunningham recorded rounds of 70 and 75 to finish at 145, one shot off the all-tournament total. Sophomore Lee Whitehead was next for coach Polk Brown's team, placing in a tie for 17th with identical rounds of 74 for a 148 total.

Tech's lineup in the first tournament of the spring season also included freshman Bryce Kendrick (77-73—150), freshman Mitch Thomas (76-79—155) and senior Greg Kitts (79-77—156).  Senior Lee Maxwell competed individually and tied for 35th place with a 75-77—152 total.

Host Augusta State, which won the NCAA Division I National Championship in 2010 and 2011, won its own tournament by 16 shots. Augusta State shot team rounds of 292 and 278 for a 570.

Northern Illinois (300-286—586) placed second, jumping past two teams in the final round. Third place went to Jacksonville State (303-288) and USC Upstate (293-298) which tied at 591. Wofford was fifth with scores of 303 and 292 for a 595, just one shot better than the Golden Eagles.

Tech, which held third place after a first-round 297, shot 299 in the second round to finish at 596. Charleston Southern (597) was seventh, followed by Presbyterian (606), Gardner-Webb (608) and North Carolina Central (670).

Tech's next outing will be the Samford Intercollegiate, March 4-5, at the Hoover (Ala.) Country Club.
