Whitehead in 3rd, Tech in 6th after first day of OVC Championship

DICKSON, Tenn. -- Sophomore Lee Whitehead carded a two-under 70 at the GreyStone Golf Club to lead the Tennessee Tech men's golf team at the first round of the 2013 Ohio Valley Conference championship tournament.

Whitehead is just one stroke off of the lead and is tied with three other players for third place. He will tee off at 9:30 a.m. CDT Friday morning

The Golden Eagles shot a team score of 295 and are tied with Eastern Kentucky for sixth place with two rounds to play. Austin Peay leads the tournament with a 284. Murray State's Patrick Newcomb and UT Martin's Brendon Caballero are tied for the individual lead at 69.

Whitehead birdied the ninth, 10th and 12th holes en route to his team-best 70. Seniors Greg Kitts and Lee Maxwell entered the clubhouse close behind Whitehead, carding scores of 73 and 75, respectively. Kitts is in a tie for 17th while Maxwell is tied for 29th out of the 55 golfers. Freshmen Mitchell Thomas and Adam Cunningham round out the Tech squad, with scores of 77 and 82.

Cunningham will begin play for Tech Friday at 8:50 a.m. in Dickson. Live scoring is provided by the OVC here.
