COOKEVILLE, Tenn. -- The 2009 season got underway last week for
most of the college football teams around the nation, but for the
Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles, it all begins Thursday night when
they kick off Watson Brown’s third season as TTU head
coach.
It also marks the beginning of Brown’s 25th season as a
collegiate head coach.
The Golden Eagles (0-0) host Pikeville College, meeting the NAIA
school from Kentucky for the first time in history. The Bears are
0-1 this season after dropping their season opener last week to
Brevard, 40-3.
Tech has some key veteran returnees in the lineup, but Brown and
his staff also have 17 first-year players on the two-deep chart for
Thursday’s contest, including 14 freshmen.
The 2009 Golden Eagle roster includes just nine seniors, four of
whom have been voted as team captains by their teammates. All four
play on the defensive side of scrimmage -- Derrian Waters, Kelvin
Quarles, Brendon Fisher and Taron Ryce.
There are some special events planned for the opener -- it’s
Communiversity Night, First Tennessee Bank Poster Night, and
Military and Public Safety Appreciation Night.
Season and individual game tickets are on sale at the Athletics
Ticket Office in Eblen Center or by calling (931) 372-3940.
