CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- Tennessee Tech junior offensive guard Taylor
Askew has received another honor for his academic success, earning
a spot on the 12th annual Football Championship Subdivision
Athletics Directors Association Academic All-Star Team.
The 55 players named to the Academic All-Star Team were
announced Friday by the Football Championship Subdivision Athletics
Directors Association (FCS ADA) from a field of 86 total nominees.
The winners were announced at the FCS football championship in
Chattanooga.
"The FCS ADA looks forward to honoring outstanding
student-athletes each year, which culminates with the annual
academic all-star team announcement," said FCS ADA President Peter
Fields, chair of the FCS ADA Academic All-Star Team Selection
Committee and athletics director at Montana State University.
"These football players that represent the true meaning of the word
student-athlete and we are proud of their accomplishments both in
the classroom and on the field."
Football players from all Football Championship Subdivision
institutions are eligible for these prestigious awards. Each of the
nominees were required to have a minimum grade point average of
3.20 (on a 4.00 scale) in undergraduate study and have been a
starter or key player with legitimate athletics credentials. He
must have reached his second year of athletics and academic
standing at the nominated institution and have completed a minimum
of one full academic year at the nominated institution. He must
also have participated in 50 percent of the games played at his
designated position.
Last month, Askew was named to the ESPN The Magazine/COSIDA
Academic All-America Football Team.
A junior from Knoxville, Askew owns a 4.0 grade point average
while majoring in political science, and has been a starter for the
Golden Eagles in every game the last two seasons. He is part of an
offensive line that ranks among national FCS leaders in fewest
sacks allowed, and helped the Golden Eagles bring home the 2009
Sgt. York Trophy by going 3-0 against the league's in-state
schools. This season Tech finished second in the OVC standings and
were 6-5 overall.
Askew has been named to the TTU Athletic Director's Honor Roll all
six of his semesters. The winner of the OVC Academic Medal of Honor
for posting the highest GPA in the league among all conference
football players each of the past two years, Askew was also named
to the OVC Commissioner's Honor Roll the last two seasons. He is a
2006 graduate of The Webb School in Knoxville.
"We are extremely proud of Taylor," said TTU Director of Athletics Mark Wilson. "He is an outstanding representative of the Golden Eagle football team as well as the University, and this honors is a reflection of his commitment to excellence in the classroom as well as on the field."
