LEDBETTER, Ky. - Just two days after the start of the 2013-14 season, the women's golf team has already shown that just because they're young, doesn't mean they can't compete. The Golden Eagles tied for fifth place at the Drake Creek Invitational Tuesday afternoon.

The fifth-place finish is the second highest by a women's team at Tech in over a year, with the tournament win at the Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate last spring being the lone result higher. The Golden Eagles put together a total score of 950 for the two-day, 54-hole tournament at the par-72, 6,178-yard Drake Creek Golf Course.

Maddi Everts led the way for the Golden Eagles in the tournament, placing 16th overall after carding rounds of 76, 77, and 79 for a 232 total. The sophomore continued her hot play after finishing third overall in the Ohio Valley Conference tournament last spring.

Freshman Whitney Robertson carded the low round on Tuesday for the Golden Eagles, scoring a 78 to round out a 240 total for the tournament. The score helped her finish tied for 28th and third among the Tech starting five.

Another newbie, Lydia Triplett, finished an impressive career-opening tournament, totaling a 240 overall score after carding rounds of 75, 79, and 82. The freshman finished second on the Golden Eagles and tied for 20th overall.

Sophomores Megan Williamson and Allison Geer rounded out the scoring for the Golden Eagles, finishing with scores of 244 and 245, respectively.

Freshman Haley Davidson made her Golden Eagle debut as an individual, carding 86, 83, and 84 for a total of 253 for the two-day affair. She finished in 47th for the tournament that featured over 60 players from 10 different teams, including five other OVC programs.

The Golden Eagles will return to action on Monday, Sept. 16 when they travel to the Great Smokies Invitational hosted by Western Carolina at the Waynesville Inn Golf Resort and Spa.
