SEVIERVILLE, Tenn. – Eastern Kentucky overtook the first day leader to capture the team championship Tuesday, while host Tennessee Tech saw slight improvement in the second round and climbed one spot in the standings at the 2014 Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate held at Sevierville Golf Course.
Teams enjoyed vastly improved playing conditions and pleasant weather on Tuesday after enduring wet, cold conditions on Monday.
The Lady Colonels didn't have the low score on the final day, but still jumped from third to first place, edging Evansville by four shots for the title. EKU shot 318 Monday and added a 307 Tuesday for the win. Evansville shot Tuesday's best round of 306 after opening with a 323 on Monday.
Indiana State and Marshall tied for third place at 631, while first-day leader, Murray State, slipped to fifth. The Racers carded a 315 Monday but added a 318 Tuesday and watched as four teams moved ahead.
The Golden Eagles cut four shots off their first day 329 total, shooting a 325 on Tuesday and moving from 10th to ninth place in the 13-team field.
The second five included Belmont (641), Austin Peay and West Georgia (643), Tech (654) and Presbyterian (657). Northern Kentucky (665), Tennessee State (711) and the NKU Second Squad (712) rounded out the field.
Indiana State's Marissa Uradomo captured individual medalist honors, matching her first round 74 with the same score Tuesday for a 36-hole total of 148. That was good to nudge her past Murray State's Delaney Howson, who led after the first day with a 70 but struggled to a 79 Tuesday to finish second.
Joining that pair on the all-tournament team were Kayla Katterhenry of Evansville and Jessica Cathey of Austin Peay.
Maddi Everts, a sophomore from Ooltewah, Tenn., finished with a 78 Tuesday and led Tech with a 36-hole 161 to place tied for 22nd. Three players came into the second round tied for the team lead with an 82 Monday. Freshman Whitney Robertson (in photo above) broke the tie with an 81 Tuesday and placed 30th at 163.
Right behind was sophomore Megan Williamson, whose 82 left her tied for 33rd place at 164. She was followed by sophomore Allison Geer, whose 84 Tuesday put her in 41st place at 166. Freshman Lydia Triplett completed Tech's lineup, shooting 85-86—171 and finishing in 54th place.
Freshman Haley Davidson also competed in the tournament, shooting as an individual. She shot 88-83—171 to finish tied with Triplett for 54th place.
The next action for the Golden Eagles is at the EKU Colonel Classic, April 4-5, in Richmond, Ky.
