CHARLESTON, S.C. – Cool temperatures and coastal breezes made playing conditions rough Tuesday, and the Tennessee Tech women's golf teams saw its scores rise and it's final standing drop to close out the Kiawah Island Classic.
Opening the day in 24th place after carding a 311 team total in Monday's second round, the Golden Eagles on Tuesday jumped to 352. Tech slipped to 30th place among the 36 teams in the nation's largest college tournament.
Playing the difficult Oak Point Golf Course, where scores were already higher than on the Cougar Point layout, all five Tech players saw their scores jump from Monday's total. In fact, four of the five posted their highest round of the tournament on Tuesday.
Junior Maddi Everts, who shot a 74 Monday, posted the team's low score on Tuesday with an 86. That gave her a three-day total of 248 and placed her 128th on the field of 192 golfers.
Tech's leader in the tourney was freshman Whitney Robertson, who closed with an 86 Tuesday after shooting 73 Monday. Her total of 239 left her in a tie for 90th place after opening the day 39th.
Sophomore Megan Williamson was next, tied for 133rd place with a 252 total after shooting an 86 Tuesday. She was followed by freshman Lydia Triplett at 258, with a 95 to close the day. Freshman Haley Davidson slipped to a 96 Tuesday and finished with a 54-hole total of 273.
Kent State cruised to the team title with an 892 team total, finishing 14 shots ahead of Penn State's 906. High Point (907) placed third, followed by Chattanooga (908) and Jacksonville State (910).
The Golden Eagles (996) finished one shot behind Newberry (995) and one better than Rutgers (997). Other teams behind Tech included Northern Kentucky, The Citadel, Bucknell, Richmond, and Niagara.
In Tech's second event of the spring, coach Polk Brown's team will find itself traveling across the country to Las Vegas for the Bison Invitational hosted by Bucknell. The two-day event, spanning Monday, March 10 and Tuesday, March 11, will mark the first time in Brown's head coaching tenure that the squad will travel by air to such a distant destination. The tournament will take place at the Paiute Golf Resort.
