COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – Followers of the Tennessee Tech women's golf team can rest assured they will get ample chances to watch the Golden Eagles compete this fall. Head coach Polk Brown announced the team's fall schedule with five matches awaiting the squad, including four on familiar grounds.
The Golden Eagles will open the 2013-14 campaign in Ledbetter, Ky., at the MSU Drake Creek Invitational hosted by Ohio Valley Conference rival Murray State. The 54-hole tournament will take place Sept. 9-10 at the Drake Creek Golf Course.
"We're going back to Murray's tournament and it's always an honor to play with them," Brown said. "They're a very good team year-in and year-out. We're looking forward to playing with them."
Tech will hit the links once more in the opening month, making the trip to a familiar tournament in Waynesville, N.C., on Sept. 16-17. The Golden Eagles will take part in the Great Smokies Invitational, a 36-hole tournament hosted by Western Carolina. Tech has played in this tournament all 14 years since it made its debut, claiming the team championships in 1999 and 2000 and finishing third in 2008. It's one of the largest fields Tech will compete against this year.
The month of October features three tournaments, including two in the state of Tennessee. On Oct. 7-8, the Golden Eagles will play in the CSU Wendy's Invitational hosted by Charleston Southern. The tournament will feature 36 holes at the prestigious Rivertowne Golf Course, rated as a 4.5 star course by Golf Digest's Places to Play.
"The tournament that stands out in terms of where we're going is the CSU Wendy's Invitational hosted by Charleston Southern," Brown said. "I've had the privelege of playing Rivertowne before and it's a very, very good golf course. They've held an LPGA event there, so we're looking forward to that trip."
A second tournament hosted by an OVC rival will be Oct. 14-15 as Tech will participate in the APSU F&M Bank Intercollegiate hosted by Austin Peay. It will mark the final 36-hole event of the fall as the Golden Eagles look to improve on last year's ninth place finish.
Wrapping up the fall swing will be the MTSU Blue Raider Invitational, a grinding, 54-hole tournament spanning Oct. 21-22 at Old Fort Golf Course in Murfreesboro. This will mark the second consecutive season the Golden Eagles will make their way to the event hosted by in-state rival Middle Tennessee.
"MTSU gives us a chance to play against one of our former OVC rivals and any time we can play with them we try to jump at the chance," Brown said.
"We're going to be very young this year," Brown said. "We only have one upperclassman in senior Amber Shepherd. We also have no juniors. We have three sophomores and three freshmen coming in for this season. I'm looking forward to seeing how everybody steps up.
"I'm just looking forward to seeing everything play out this year," Brown added. "I really feel good about this squad coming into the fall and I'm excited to get things going."
