MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala. – Youth and inexperience couldn't hold down the Tennessee Tech women's golf team Wednesday afternoon, as the Golden Eagles capped a fifth place finish at the Ohio Valley Conference Championships to improve a spot on last year's result.
With only two returning members from last year's tournament participants, the Golden Eagles placed three individuals in the top 16 out of 50 players this year. Tech carded a third round 320, finishing the event with a total three-round score of 934.
Highlighting the third round was the finish by freshman Whitney Robertson, who after carding a 78 on the day, finished fourth overall to earn All-Tournament honors. She became the second straight Tech freshman to earn an All-Tournament nod, following in the footsteps of current sophomore Maddi Everts. Robertson wrapped up the tournament with an overall score of 228, just 12 strokes over par.
Everts grabbed the next spot among Tech's scorers, battling tough conditions to shoot 81 on the day to finish in a tie for 11th overall, just missing out on her second consecutive top 10 finish at the event. She finished the three-day event with a total score of 233.
Enjoying a career performance at the Championships was sophomore Allison Geer, who tied for 16th in the event for the best finish of her young career. On Wednesday, Geer tallied an 81 to card a final tournament total of 235.
Rounding out the scorers for Tech was sophomore Megan Williamson, whose third-round 80 earned her a tie for 22nd overall among the field. Williamson totaled 238 for the week, recording arguably the most consistent scores among the Golden Eagles.
Freshman Lydia Triplett grabbed a third round score of 83, wrapping up tournament play with an overall total of 245. The youngster finished 28th in the 50-player field.
Murray State claimed the championship, overcoming a six-shot deficit on the final day. Racer senior Delaney Howson took home the individual medalist crown, finishing four strokes under par for the event.
