COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – Following two outstanding weeks of
training and preparation since their last competition, the
Tennessee Tech track & field team joins a field featuring
athletes from nearly 40 other schools Friday and Saturday at an
indoor meet hosted by East Tennessee State University.
It's the 2015 Buccaneer Invitational inside the Athletics Center
on David E. Walker Track at Gentry Field.
Action Friday begins early with the pentathlon events, and will conclude for the day with the men's 5000-meter run at 7 p.m. ET. Action will pick back up on Saturday morning with the women's long jump at 8:30 and wrap up with the 4x400-meter relays at 5 and 5:30 p.m.
"We have had two solid weeks of training and we are ready for
some major breakthroughs and school records," said head coach Wayne
Angel of the weekend at ETSU. "These young ladies are hungry and
very motivated; they are ready to step up their game this
weekend."
Angel has a squad of 16 at the team's fourth meet of the indoor
season, including freshman Katie O'Neill who is competing for the
first time since the cross country season. She will compete in the
800-meter run.
Among the busiest athletes will be Atlanta
Westbrook, competing in two individual events and two relays.
The last time out, Westbrook, a junior from Columbia, Tenn., broke
the school record in the triple jump, adding that mark to the
school record in the outdoor triple jump to her resume. She will be
compete in the 400-meter dash and long jump, along with the
distance medley relay and 4x400 relay.
Another busy athlete for the Golden Eagles will be Chelsea Mills,
a versatile junior from Chattanooga. Expected to compete later this
spring in the pentathlon, she is adding shot put to her long list
of events, as she readies for the conference pentathlon
competition. She will also compete this weekend in the long and
triple jumps and the 4x400 relay. Already in her career, Mills has
competed in the long, triple and high jumps, sprints, hurdles,
relays and middle distance events.
Tech has the ETSU meet this weekend, followed next weekend at the
Indiana Invitational in Bloomington, Ind., before heading to
Charleston, Ill., Feb. 27-28 for the Ohio Valley Conference Indoor
Championships.
"As we prepare for the last phase of our training, these final two meets become very critical in our preparation for the OVC championships," Angel said.
Live results will be available throughout the meet at TandFLive.com. Tickets will be available for purchase on Saturday only from 8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. for $5 on the third level on the west side of the Dome. Parking will be available for fans on campus in Lot 22 - A.
