JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – Apparently seeing her teammate's
name in the record books for the past two weeks served as
inspiration for Chelsea Mills.
On Friday afternoon, the junior from Chattanooga erased Atlanta
Westbook's name in the triple jump and penciled in her own name,
the highlight of the first day of competition for the Tennessee
Tech track & field team at the ETSU Buccaneer Invitational.
After Westbrook broke the Tech record in the triple jump two weeks
ago in Birmingham, Mills reclaimed the mark with a leap of 38 feet,
1.5 inches to place second in the event. The record fell on Mills'
third jump of the afternoon, and beat Westbrook's two-week old mark
by nearly six inches.
In addition to Mills' school record, Tech athletes also posted
five personal-best and missed another by the smallest time
measurement possible in a track meet.
In the 60-meter dash, Tiara Hymon
posted a PR with a time of 8.13 seconds, while Brittany
McGee's time of 8.34 seconds was just .01 off her PR of
8.33.
Hymon also recorded a personal-best in the 200-meter dash with a
time of 26.45 seconds. McGee did claim a personal-best in the 200m
with a time of 27.71 seconds.
The 5,000-meter run, the longest race of the day, provided two
personal-best efforts by Golden Eagles runners – three if you
consider that Sonel
Bezuidenhout's team-best time of 19:14.02 was the first time
she ran that distance. Freshmen Baylee
Balgemann (20:18.84) and Lera McNamara
(20:34.25) did beat their own previous best efforts.
Action will pick up again Saturday morning with the women's long
jump at 8:30 a.m. The day's events wrap up with the 4x400-meter
relay at 5 p.m.
