Golden Eagles harvest record, personal bests at Green & Gold Invitational

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Atlanta Westbrook is now the most successful triple jumper in Tennessee Tech history, no matter whether it's indoors or out.

On Saturday, the junior from Columbia, Tenn., broke the indoor school record and finished in fourth place in the event at the UAB Green & Gold Invitational when she landed a leap of 37 feet, 5.75 inches.

She adds the indoor record to the school record she set last spring during the outdoor season in the same event. In this weekend's effort, she eclipsed the mark of 36 feet, 11.5 inches set Dec. 7, 2013, by teammate Chelsea Mills.

Westbrook's fourth place showing was one of two Golden Eagles to place fourth and earn four team points in the standings.

Sonel Bezuidenhout, who just joined the team last week, finished fourth in the 3,000-meter run with a time of 11:25.56. It was the first collegiate meet for the  freshman from Pretoria, South Africa.

In addition to those two fourth place finishes, the Golden Eagle track team recorded several personal best efforts including two that are close to challenging additional school standards.

Freshman Madison Stremler ran a career-best time of 2:21.44 in the 800m to place fourth, a time that is just six seconds off the school record.

Junior Brooklyn Kimball continues to flirt with a 16-year-old school record. She ran a time of 26.59 seconds in the 200-meter dash, just off the TTU mark of 25.80 seconds, a time set by Gwen Cannon in 1998.

Tiara Hymon, a junior from Memphis had two PR efforts Saturday. She posted a time of 1:02.62 in the 400-meter dash, and a 27.93 in the 200-meter dash.

Lera McNamara, a freshman from Canton, Ga., had a personal best I the 5,000-meter run, covering the distance in 20:54.14.

In the 60-meter hurdles, junior Chelsea Mills had a career-best of 10.15 seconds, while Christina Driscoll, a freshman from Lake in the Hills, Ill., had a PR at 800m with a time of 2:37.46.

In addition to her school record in the triple jump, Westbrook just missed a personal best in the long jump with a mark of 16 feet, 6.5 inches.

Tech has a couple of weeks to prepare for its next action, the ETSU Invitational in Johnson City, Tenn., Feb. 6-7.
