Golden Eagles set 10 personal-best marks at Commodore Invitational

NASHVILLE, Tenn. –  On the second weekend of the 2015 track & field season, Tennessee Tech made some strides toward improving times and distances against a challenging field at the Commodore Invitational, hosted by Vanderbilt.

Golden Eagle student-athletes broke 10 individual personal-best marks over the two-day event, and several others established new personal-best marks when competing in first-time events.

"I thought that we competed well as a team," said first-year coach Wayne Angel. "The kids are starting to buy into what we are telling them and as a result their hard work is starting to pay off. We are taking steps in the right direction, although they may be small steps. The process is working. We now have something to build upon."

Among the top performances recognized by Angel were efforts by Madison Stremler (800m), Brooklyn Kimball (200m and 400m), Anna Cooper (3,000m) and the mile relay team of Atlanta Westbrook, Tiara Hymon, Kimball and Stremler.

Brittany McGee, Kimball and Jaelyn Todd each produced two personal-best marks at Vanderbilt.

For McGee, new PR times came in the 60m dash at 8.33 seconds, and the 200m in 27.74 seconds. The two new PR times for Kimball were 26.46 seconds in the 200m dash and 59.76 seconds in the 400m event. Kimball's 400m time beat her PR that had stood since the 2012 season.

For Todd, PR distances were 26 feet, 11 inches in the shot put and 35 feet, five inches in the weight throw.

Four others posted personal marks. They include Kayla Turnage (27.39 seconds in the 200m), Chelsea Mills (10.62 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles), Tiara Hymon (1:03.39 at 400m) and Christina Driscoll (15 feet, 8.25 inches in the long jump).

Tech's next action finds the team back in Birmingham, Ala., where the Golden Eagles opened the season a week ago. This time, the UAB meet is called the Green & Gold Invitational, with competition set for Friday and Saturday.
