COOKEVILLE, Tenn. - The Tennessee Tech soccer team recently
spent some time in the community visiting Capshaw Elementary,
Heavenly Host Lutheran School, Jere Whitson Elementary and Bethesda
Health Care Center to have some fun with students and
residents.
The team held a variety of different activities at each stop. At
Capshaw Elementary the Golden Eagles took three second grade P.E.
classes outside to play games and teach basic soccer fundamentals,
and finished with a relay race combining the skills taught.
"We're glad we can work with Tennessee Tech," said Nancy Lewis,
Capshaw P.E. teacher. "The kids love to be with the team and
develop different sets of skills. It's a major plus for our
physical education program."
At Heavenly Host Lutheran School the squad visited each classroom
and handed out posters and stickers, before taking the fifth grade
P.E. class outside for games. During their visit to Jere Whitson
Elementary the team read to students and held relay races on the
playground.
On the team's final stop they visited Bethesda Health Care Center
and enjoyed a carnival for the residents with games contests, and a
petting zoo.
"We really want to get out into the community," head coach Becky
Fletcher said. "The girls really enjoy it. It's a good opportunity
for the team to see how much they can have an impact on a younger
child's day."
Fletcher said the team plans on staying involved in community
service, and will schedule regular visits throughout the
season.
"It helps take the focus off of soccer and school for a little
while," Fletcher said. "They want to get involved and spend quality
time in the community, and you can see the change in their
attitudes as a result."
