Golden Eagle soccer drops heartbreaker at UNC Asheville

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The Tennessee Tech soccer team held a one-goal lead for most of its match against UNC Asheville Sunday, but two late goals from the Bulldogs gave UNC Asheville a 2-1 victory.

Freshman Andrea Meloff scored her team-leading third goal of the season off an assist from freshman Kerri Reid in the 20th minute. The Golden Eagles held a 1-0 lead until deep into the second half, but in the 72nd minute Lauren Turnburke took advantage of a Tech turnover and scored for the Bulldogs to even the score at 1.

12 minutes later Chloe Small-McCleary, who assisted UNC Asheville’s first goal, put one in the back of the net for the game-winning goal.

The Golden Eagles held a 16-14 advantage in shots, an 8-5 advantage in shots-on-goal, and a 9-2 advantage in corner kicks, but fell short of their bid for their second win of 2009, as Tech falls to 1-5-1 on the season. Meanwhile, UNC Asheville improves to 3-2-0 on the year.

Michelle Decker had three shots for the Golden Eagles in the match, while Meloff, Reid, Brooke Mayo and Ashley Smith each had two. Reid’s assist was her second of the season. Tech goalkeeper Kaitlyn Thacker had three saves in the first half.

In addition to her goal and assist, Small McCleary had six total shots, including three on goal for the Bulldogs. UNC Asheville Goalkeeper Veronica Lazar finished the match with seven saves.

The Golden Eagles will wrap up their seven-game road trip next weekend at the University of Kentucky tournament. Tech will face Marshall on Sept. 18 before squaring off against Kentucky on Sept. 20. The Golden Eagles will return home on Sept. 25 to open up Ohio Valley Conference play against UT Martin.
