Golden Eagles drop late decision at Radford

RADFORD, Va. -- The Tennessee Tech soccer team found itself in a scoreless tie in the 82nd minute against Radford on Sunday, but the Highlanders stole a 1-0 victory over Tech with a late game-winning goal.

The Golden Eagles played tight defense, and sophomore goalkeeper Kaitlyn Thacker had seven saves. But Radford took advantage of a pair of fresh legs, as Melony Davis entered the game for the first time just moments before netting the game's only goal.

The Golden Eagles had five shots, including three on goal, while Radford posted 16. But despite a discrepancy in shots taken, neither team had many good scoring opportunities. The Golden Eagles used a five-defender system to limit Radford's offense. The system gave Tech a chance to win until Davis' scored the game's only goal off a center from just outside the box.

Ashley Smith Kerri Reid and Andrea Meloff all posted shots on goal for the Golden Eagles, and Jen Hoffman and Michelle Decker also added shots. The Highlanders held a 10-1 advantage in corner kicks in the match.

Tech falls to 0-3-0 on the season, while Radford, which was picked to repeat as Big South champions, improved to 2-0-0.

The Golden Eagles continue their seven-game road trip next weekend with a trip to Alabama State on Sept. 3 before facing Texas State on Sept. 5 in a neutral site in Birmingham, Ala.

Tech will play at home next when it opens Ohio Valley Conference play on Sept. 25 against UT Martin.
