Golden Eagles close out indoor regular season at Saturday's Samford Open

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee Tech indoor track and field program closes out the regular-season portion of the 2022-23 indoor campaign, heading to Birmingham, Ala. for the Samford Open on Saturday, Feb. 11.

Feb. 11, 2023 – Located at the Birmingham CrossPlex in Birmingham, Ala. Saturday's action will kick off with field events at 9:00 a.m. CT and running events at 10:00 a.m.

What to Watch For
The purple and gold delivered yet another strong grouping of results in its most recent action, competing at the Tigers Indoor Invitational hosted by Sewanee at the end of January. Kendall Medders and Sidnee Stanton paced the Cookeville crew on their way to their second consecutive honors from the Ohio Valley Conference.

Medders turned in a personal record in the high jump, clearing 1.66 meters (5'5.25") for the best mark in the league this season on her way to her second career OVC Field Athlete of the Week recognition. Stanton turned in a long jump of 5.58 meters (18'3.75") and a triple jump of 10.67 meters (35'0") to take home OVC Freshman Athlete of the Week accolades for the second time.

Senior Anya Akili captured first place in the long jump, delivering a PR of 5.65 meters (18'6.5") while also producing a season-high jump of 1.41 meters (4'7.5") in the high jump. Rookie Jalyn Rice placed second in the triple jump overall with a mark of 11.24 meters (36'10.5").

On the track side, Trenia Stephens led a trio of Golden Eagles showing strong results in the 55-meter dash. The junior clocked in with a personal-best time of 7.30 to finish second overall. Close behind was Kategie Casseus in third at 7.45 while Ashtin Holman turned in a time of 7.52 to place fifth. 

Sophomore Amara Nwajagu captured the 400-meter dash title behind a time of 1:00.76. Paris Bowles secured a medalist finish in the 800-meter run, putting forth a time of 2:30.62. Just a second behind, Nyla Armand placed second for a 1-2 finish with an effort of 2:31.78.

The Golden Eagles wrap up the indoor campaign at the OVC Indoor Championships in Birmingham, Ala with two days of competition on Wednesday, Feb. 22 and Thursday, Feb. 23.
