Tech delivers plethora of strong performances at Tigers Indoor Invitational

SEWANEE, Tenn. – For the third straight week, the Tennessee Tech indoor track & field team produced a strong helping of results, this time competing at the Tigers Indoor Invitational hosted by Sewanee at the Fowler Center.

The jumps squad turned in a big day for the purple and gold, led by Kendall Medders and the crew taking part in the high jump. The junior delivered a new personal record by clearing 1.66 meters (5'5.25") to place first overall.

Fellow junior Cayla Johnson turned in a third-place jump by clearing a season-best 1.56 meters (5'1.5"). Finishing fifth overall, senior Anya Akili turned in a season-high jump of 1.41 meters (4'7.5").

Akili was especially impressive in the long jump, placing first while delivering a PR of 5.65 meters (18'6.5"). Freshman Sidnee Stanton was just behind, finishing third while turning in a leap of 5.58 meters (18'3.75"). Fellow rookie Jalyn Rice rounded out the top-five group, placing fifth with a mark of 5.11 meters (16'9.25").

Rice led the group of triple jumpers on the day, turning a jump of 11.24 meters (36'10.5") for a second-place finish. Senior Jalena Curbeam contributed a third-place showing of 11.09 meters (36'4.5") while Stanton closed out the group with a fourth-place mark of 10.67 meters (35'0").

Moving on to the track side of things, Trenia Stephens led a trio of Golden Eagles showing strong results in the 55-meter dash. The junior clocked in with a personal-best time of 7.30 to finish second overall. Close behind was Kategie Casseus in third at 7.45 while Ashtin Holman turned in a time of 7.52 to place fifth. 

Holman followed up her solid showing with an indoor PR in the 200-meter dash, winning the event with a time of 26.30. Stephens delivered a runner-up performance, clocking in at 26.92.

Sophomore Amara Nwajagu captured the 400-meter dash title behind a time of 1:00.76. Paris Bowles secured a medalist finish in the 800-meter run, putting forth a time of 2:30.62. Just a second behind, Nyla Armand placed second for a 1-2 finish with an effort of 2:31.78.

The Golden Eagles compete next at the Samford Open on Saturday, Feb. 11, with the full squad prepared to take part in the final event before the Ohio Valley Conference Indoor Championships.
