Morehead State takes two from Golden Eagle softball in OVC opener

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – Morehead State pulled away late in the first contest, then struck for seven runs in the second as the visiting Eagles took both games in the doubleheader on Saturday.

The Golden Eagles (3-22, 0-2 Ohio Valley Conference) close out their first league series of the season on Sunday, starting at 12 p.m.

Nicolle Nysted drove in two of Tech's three runs in the contest, while Savannah Talley had the only multi-hit game among the seven Golden Eagle safeties, collecting two.

In the second game, Haeli Bryson and Abby Buettner each had two hits, while Carmen Betts drove in Tech's lone run in the bottom of the first.

After Morehead scored two in the top of the first in the day's opener, Tech tied the game as Nysted placed a two-run single through the left side of the infield, driving in Bryson and Tristen Head. The Golden Eagles then took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the second as Makayli Harris hit an RBI single to plate Ella Bishop.

Morehead State took a 5-3 lead in the top of the fifth with a two-out, three-run home run, then added two more runs in the top of the seventh on five hits.

Callie Piper took the loss, allowing seven runs on 10 hits, walking six and striking out five.

In the second game, the visitors tagged Kaylan Cole for six runs – one earned – on one hit, four walks and an error, then put another one as Gracelyn Woollen came on in relief.

Woollen allowed two runs on eight hits across 6 2/3 innings, walking two and striking out three.

Tech scored its lone run In the bottom of the first as Betts knocked Abby Shoulders home on a single to left center. Neither team scored a run until Morehead State scored one more on a groundout.
