KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – No. 13 Tennessee proved to be too much for the Tennessee Tech tennis team in its 2021 season opener, as the Golden Eagles were upended 7-0 Saturday afternoon.

The Vols (2-0), who knocked off Oklahoma earlier in the day to start their spring campaign, dropped just one singles set en route to the win over the purple and gold. Sophomore Rafael Tosetto showed promise in the No. 3 spot for Tech (0-1), rallying back from a 6-4 first-set loss to capture the second set, 6-2, over Mark Wallner. Wallner ultimately seized the matchup with a 10-7 triumph in the third and final set.

Prata Martim and Johannus Monday took care of business at the top of the lineup for UT, with Martim registering a 6-1, 6-1 win over Evzen Holis in the top spot and Monday collecting a 6-2, 6-2 victory against Carlos Vicente in the No. 2 position.

Luca Wiedemann picked up a 6-1, 6-2 nod over Elias Grubert in the No. 4 battle, while Joel Gamerov secured a 6-4, 6-3 triumph against Tech newcomer Andre Rodeia in the No. 5 slot and Josh Raab earned a 6-1, 6-1 win against fellow TTU newcomer Jun Sasagawa in the No. 6 clash.

Although Tech was unable to claim the doubles point, the Golden Eagles were able to pick up a victory during tandem action thanks to an Evzen Holis and Jun Sasagawa 6-4 win over Andrew Rogers and Mark Wallner in the No. 2 position.

Johannus Monday and Martim Prata earned a 6-2 nod over Mika Berghaus and Carlos Vicente in the top slot, while Joel Gamerov and Giles Hussey knocked off Rafael Tosetto and Andre Rodeia, 6-3, in the No. 3 spot.

The Golden Eagles will have a lengthy layoff before returning to action on Jan. 31 with a meeting at Louisville.
