Tech tennis notches first win of the year with 4-3 triumph at Kennesaw State

KENNESAW, Ga. – In a match that went right down to the wire, the Tennessee Tech tennis team checked the win column for the first time this spring thanks to a 4-3 victory Sunday afternoon at Kennesaw State.

With the contest squared away at 3-3, Elias Grubert rallied to pick up a win out of the No. 4 spot, pushing the purple and gold to the finish line in the last singles clash to conclude. Grubert powered past Kevin Patel with a 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (7-5) triumph that officially clinched the contest.  

Tech (1-5) enjoyed its fair share of success at the top of the singles lineup, picking up nods in two of the top three positions. Carlos Vicente claimed straight-set, 6-4, 6-4 victory over Sebastian Osorio in the No. 1 spot, while Evzen Holis did the same behind a 6-4, 6-4 triumph against Raul Garcia in the No. 3 battle.

The Owls (3-8) took care of business at the bottom of the lineup with wins out of the final two spots. Seru Tezuka picked up a 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 victory over Andre Rodeia in the No. 5 position and Gaston Muhammad earned a 6-2, 6-4 nod against Mika Berghaus in the No. 6 affair. Sergio Ingles was responsible for the other KSU point, moving past Rafael Tosetto with a 4-6, 7-6 (8-6), 6-4 win in the No. 2 battle.

The Golden Eagles clinched the doubles point with a pair of hard-fought wins out of the No. 1 and No. 3 matchups. Evzen Holis and Jun Sasagawa took home a 7-5 victory against Sergio Ingles and Seru Tezuka in the No. 1 tilt, while Rafael Tosetto and Elias Grubert scooted past Sebastian Osorio and Kevin Patel, 7-6 (11-9), in the No. 3 spot.

Raul Garcia and Harvey Conway notched a 6-3 nod against Carlos Vicente and Andre Rodeia in the No. 2 tangle.

The Golden Eagles will set their sights on their home opener, squaring off with Radford on Thursday, Mar. 11. First serve from Tech Tennis Courts is slated for 1 p.m. CT.
