Golden Eagle men's golf team signs Avery Irwin for 2021-22 campaign

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – Tennessee Tech men's golf head coach Polk Brown announced the addition of one player for the 2021-22 athletic season, signing Avery Irwin to a national letter of intent to play for the Golden Eagles.

Hometown: Belleville, Ill.
High School: Althoff Catholic High School

Irwin was a four-year letterwinner for head coach Dan Polites at Althoff Catholic High School in Belleville, Ill., ranking as one of the better players in the state for much of his career. A four-time qualifier for the Illinois State Championship, he earned Metro East Golf Coaches Association Player of the Year honors in 2018, 2019, and 2020. He also earned All-Conference First Team honors and Metro East All-Area First Team accolades all four years of his high school career.

As a sophomore, he claimed the individual titles at both the South Seven Conference Championship and Illinois State Regionals, as well as the Illinois State Sectionals. During his junior season, he repeated as the South Seven Conference champion and Illinois State Regional title winner while earning a runner-up finish in the Illinois State Sectionals. During his senior campaign, he earned a runner-up showing at the Gateway PGA High School Championship.

Irwin helped lead ACHS to South Seven Conference titles in 2018, 2019, and 2020 as well as Regional championships in 2018 and 2019. His team claimed Sectional runner-up finishes in each of his last three years and was the Stat Championship runner-up in 2019.

He saw a vast improvement from his freshman season to his senior campaign, shaving over seven shots of his 18-hole scoring average. Starting in 2017, he posted yearly scoring averages of 79.8, 75.7, and 73.2 before turning in an impressive 72.4 for his final year.
