INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Following a stellar showing that helped guide the Tennessee Tech tennis team to a perfect 2-0 conference start, Mika Berghaus was recognized as the Horizon League Tennis Men's Singles Player of the Week, the first such honor for a Golden Eagle this spring.
In TTU's first two matches as members of the Horizon League, Berghaus flexed his muscles at the top of Tech's singles lineup to the tune of straight-set victories in each of his solo showdowns. The Cologne, Germany product soared to a 6-2, 6-0 triumph over Lindenwood's Carlos Gonzalez in the top tangle in Saturday's bout with the Lions, before Berghaus added to his flawless weekend with a 6-2, 6-2 win against EIU's Cameron Slabbert in Sunday's affair with the Panthers.
Berghaus' excellence was part of TTU's singles dominance that saw the Golden Eagles capture 11 of 12 possible solo matchups over the weekend. Overall, Tech topped Lindenwood 7-0 and Eastern Illinois 6-1 to move to 2-0 in the conference.
Berghaus and the rest of the purple and gold will prepare for its first home conference matches of the season, as the Golden Eagles will host Tennessee State on Saturday, Mar. 25 and Belmont and Sunday, Mar. 26. Tech's tussle with TSU is slated to start at 1 p.m. CT, while Sunday's tilt with the Bruins is scheduled for a 2 p.m. beginning. Admission to both matches at Tech Tennis Courts is free of charge.
