JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – Playing in its first match in the month of March, the Tennessee Tech tennis team dropped its Sunday road contest with a 6-1 loss at ETSU.
After Friday's originally slated home opener was wiped out due to inclement weather, Tech's tangle with the Bucs (4-8) continued a rigorous road voyage that has seen the Golden Eagles play all nine of their matches away from Cookeville to start the spring. Sunday's battle with the Bucs saw Tech without its full complement of players, with only four available Golden Eagles in the mix.
TTU (0-9) was forced to forfeit the No. 5 and No. 6 singles clashes as well as the No. 3 doubles affair that led to ETSU seizing the tandem point. Tech claimed the No. 2 doubles matchup behind a Pol Masafret and Mika Berghaus 6-4 win over Francisco Lamas and Pedro Cressoni, but after Thiago Pernas and Juan Lobisano knocked off Elias Grubert and Paulo Ramos Martin in the top spot, the Buccaneers clinched the point.
Grubert was responsible for Tech's lone singles win thanks to a 2-6, 7-5, 10-7 triumph in the No. 2 affair. ETSU captured the other three completed solo showdowns in straight sets with a Dimitri Badra 6-3, 6-3 nod over Mika Berghaus in the top position, an Adam Nagoudi 7-6, 6-1 victory against Pol Masafret in the No. 3 tilt and a Francisco Lamas 6-4, 6-2 decision over Paulo Ramos Martin in the No. 4 get-together.
The Golden Eagles will push toward their newly scheduled home opener, as TTU will host Radford on Tuesday, Mar. 7. First serve from Tech Tennis Courts is set for 1 p.m. CT. Admission is free of charge.
