TULSA, Okla. – Mika Berghaus represented the Tennessee Tech tennis team in style over the weekend, as the TTU junior put together a stellar showing in the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa.
Serving as the lone Golden Eagle in the exclusive field, Berghaus collected a pair of straight-set victories on the way to reserving a spot in the Round of 64. Berghaus began his run with a 6-3, 6-0 triumph over Drexel's Kael Shah in the Round of 256, before producing an even more impressive result in his next bout with North Carolina's Anuj Watane.
Berghaus barreled his way to a 6-1, 6-1 victory over the Tarheel senior in the Round of 128 to stamp his place in the Round of 64, where he was greeted by another "Power 5" conference foe in the form of Vanderbilt's Michael Ross.
In an absolute barn burner of a battle with the Commodore sophomore, Berghaus was narrowly edged in three sets. The 6-foot-1 junior did manage to claim the opener behind a 6-4 decision, but was then upended in the next two with a 6-4 second-set loss and a 7-6 third-set defeat.
Berghaus and the rest of the purple and gold will now shift their attention to the Universal Tennis College Circuit at Belmont, hosted by the Bruins in Nashville from Oct. 8-10.
