Senior guard honored for 23-point, seven-rebound performance in win over Evansville

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – A week after being named the Mid-Major Player of the Week by CollegeHoops.net, Kevin Murphy has collected a pair of weekly honors from the Ohio Valley Conference and CollegeSportsMadness.com.

Murphy was named OVC Player of the Week by the conference’s sports information directors for his 23-point, seven-rebound performance in Tech’s 72-70 win at Evansville on Saturday. He received the same honor from CollegeSportsMadness.com.

The senior guard from Fairburn,Ga., scored 17 of his 23 points in the second half to rally the Golden Eagles back from a nine-point deficit at Evansville. Murphy hit the would-be game-winner, draining a contested three-pointer with 27 seconds left to erase a one-point Evansville lead. He also moved into seventh on Tech’s all-time scorers list in the game, surpassing Jimmy Hagan. He has now scored 1,548 career points.

Against the Purple Aces, Murphy shot 50 percent from the field, going 8-for-16. He was 2-for-4 from three-point range and extended his streak to 15 games with a made three-pointer, dating back to Feb. 26. He was also 5-for-7 from the free-throw line.

Murphy leads the OVC in scoring, averaging 21.0 points per game, and ranks 19th in NCAA Division I. He is also pulling down 5.8 rebounds per contest. He also has 18 assists and 13 steals this season.

Murphy has scored in double-figures in every game Tech has played this season and has led the Golden Eagles in scoring in their last five contests.
