COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – Tennessee Tech Director of Athletics Mark Wilson announced the resignation of Steve Smith as the head coach of the Tennessee Tech baseball team, effective as of Sunday, Oct. 31.

Smith leaves Tech for the Detroit Tigers organization in Major League Baseball, taking on the role of AA and AAA Upper-Level Pitching Coordinator.

Wilson made this statement: "I want to wish Steve and [his wife] Melinda the very best of luck. While we are sad to see Steve go, we are excited for this opportunity in front of him and want to thank him for his commitment to the Golden Eagle baseball program these past two seasons. It has not been easy navigating a global pandemic and Steve did a great job in helping our student-athletes excel with all the challenges that have been presented during this time."

Smith completed his first season with the purple and gold with a 3-12 mark prior to the remainder of the campaign being cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Golden Eagles put together a 22-25 record in 2021, finishing 15-15 in the Ohio Valley Conference and ending the season on a three-game win streak.
