Hall of Fame linebacker Dana Winningham passes away


COOKEVILLE, Tenn. -- The Tennessee Tech athletics family said goodbye last week to a member of the TTU Sports Hall of Fame, with the passing of former linebacker Dana Winningham at the age of 62.

A member of the Golden Eagle football team from 1970 through 1973, Dana Edwin Winningham was a member of coach Don Wade's 1972 Ohio Valley Conference championship team. He was selected winner of the team's Robert Hill Johnson Award following the 1973 season. As a senior, he led the team in total tackles with 133 and also tied for the team lead with four interceptions.

In 1988, he was inducted in the Tech Sports Hall of Fame.

Funeral services were held Sunday in Crossville. He passed away on Wednesday (July 1) in Cumberland Medical Center in Crossville. He was born Oct. 17, 1952, in Crossville to the late Arlie Winningham Sr. and Lucille (Patton) Winningham.

Mr. Winningham worked as an administrator at Tennessee Technological University and was a member of Linary Church of Christ. His family includes two sons, Danny Winningham II of Knoxville and Scot Winningham (Rachel), of Clinton, Tenn.; a granddaughter, Kathryn Winningham; and a sister, Gail Mayberry of Cookeville.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Arlie Winningham Jr. and Harold Winningham; and a sister, Phyllis Gunter.
