COOKEVILLE, Tenn. — The Tennessee Tech volleyball team is taking promising strides toward their upcoming season. The team competed in an intrasquad scrimmage Saturday during the Gathering of Eagles event, and more than 100 fans gathered to watch theannual Purple vs. Gold scrimmage in order to get their first glimpse at this year’s Golden Eagles team.
 
Head coach Dave Zelenock is hopeful heading into the upcoming season.
 
“A lot of these girls have not been able to play recently because of injuries,” Zelenock said, “so this (scrimmage) helped to shake off the rust a bit.”
 
Freshman setter Susan Jeziorowski from Green Lake, Wis., and junior setter Sharon Anderson from Burr Ridge, Ill., each had 31 assists in the scrimmage.
 
“Both setters did a good job moving the ball around,” Zelenock continued. “They set a rhythm and controlled the offense. They did a good job.”
 
Alyssa Povey, a 6-3 junior from Clifton, Idaho, also put up some impressive numbers with 14 kills and a .229 attacking percentage.
 
The Golden Eagles still have some work to do to prepare for the regular season, according to Zelenock.
 
“The tough thing about Week One is that you don’t get to see any video or scout any teams,” he said. “It’s just us, which means this week we are going to work on us. We will plan who our starters are going to be and work on those rotations.”
 
Tech opens regular season play at the Wright State Invitational, Aug. 28-29, in Dayton, Ohio. Tech will have its home opener Sept. 18-19 when it hosts the Golden Eagle Invitational presented by Hampton Inn, featuring matches against Towson University, Western Carolina, and Idaho.
 
All regular season matches have free admission with the opportunity for autograph signing by the team afterwards.
