Painter, Simer pace first day action for Tech
BUCHANAN, Tenn. -- Greyson Painter is in second place and Josh
Simer fourth, helping to lead the Tennessee Tech men's golf team
into second place, two strokes off the lead after the first two
rounds of the 54-hole Skyhawk Classic at Paris Landing Golf Course.
The final 18 holes will be played Tuesday.
Sam Bass of Bethel College has the individual lead after rounds of
four-under 68 and one-under 71. He sits at five-under 139 headed
into the final round.
One stroke back are Painter and Jonathan Martin of UT Martin, tied
for second place at four-under 140. Painter carded a 72 on his
first go-round, then shot a 68 in the second round. Rounding out
the top five are Simer and Steven Lecuyer of Central Arkansas, who
both ended the first two rounds at three-under 141. Simer opened
with a 69 and added a 72.
Also in Tech's lineup, Blake Garrison is tied for 32nd place at 147
(72 and 75), John Fox is tied for 40th place at 148 (76 and 72) and
Jake Heatherly is tied for 54th place at 150 (76 and 74).
Among the 10 individuals in the field, Tech's Calvin Clark is tied
for 58th place at 151, shooting rounds of 74 and 77.
Tennessee State grabbed the lead after the first round, shooting a
two-under 286, but the Tigers fell to sixth in the second round.
Murray State moved into the team lead with a two-round total of
573, edging Tech by a single stroke in each round.
Tech and Central Arkansas are tied for second at one-under-par 575,
followed by Lipscomb in fourth 578 and UT Martin in fifth at 579.
The Golden Eagles opened with a 289 and improved three shots to a
286 in the second.
Paris Landing Golf Course is part of the Tennessee Golf Trail and
is one of the signature courses of the Tennessee State Park system.
The 90-player field is made up of 16 teams from 15 different
universities and 10 participants competing as individuals. The par
72 Paris Landing Golf Course is playing at 6,685 yards.
