Painter leads Tech to sixth at Murray State Tournament

MURRAY, Ky. -- Led by a Top 10 finish from senior Greyson Painter, the Tennessee Tech men's golf team claimed sixth place among the 14 teams competing Monday and Tuesday at the 54-hole Murray State Invitational.

Painter shot rounds of 69 and 70 on Monday, and finished with a 73 Monday for a tournament total of 212, placing him in a tie for eighth place overall. Tyler Cassetty and Preston Marshal were next for coach Craig King's team, each posting a tournament total of 217 ti tie for 21st place. Cassetty shot 73 and 74 Monday, then closed strong with a 70 on Tuesday. Marshal shot 70s on his first and last rounds, with a 77 sandwiched in between.

Wesley Korth and Jared Dunn rounded out Tech's lineup. Korth shot 72, 78 and 76 to finish tied for 52nd place at 226. Dunn was one shot back at 227 and tied for 56th place with rounds of 77, 75 and 75.

Tech had one additional player in the field, with Travis Ramsey competing individually. He shot 74, 82 and 75 to place 66th with a 231 total.

Host Murray State won the team title with an 835, posting rounds of 272, 279 and 284. The Racers clinched the crown by 10 shots over Central Arkansas (845), followed by Morehead State (855), Western Illinois (856) and SIU Edwardsville (858) in the top five.

Tech shot 284 and 296 Monday, and posted a 288 Tuesday for an 868 team total for sixth place. UT Martin (873) trailed Tech for seventh place, with Lewis (880), UTM No. 2 (885) and Lipscomb (885) rounding out the top 10 teams.

Tech's men's and women's golf teams will be in Charleston Monday and Tuesday to compete in the Cuthbert Cup Challenge, hosted by the College of Charleston.
