SUNSET BEACH, N.C. -- Senior Greyson Painter finished his
weekend with an even-par 72 and claimed second place among 100
golfers and the Tennessee Tech men's golf team claimed seventh
place among 18 teams at the Sea Trail Intercollegiate
tournament.
Painter shot a 73 Friday and a three-under 69 Saturday, before
closing the 54-hole tournament with a 72 for a 214 total. That
placed him two shots back of individual medalist Steve Dressel of
Elon. Painter tied with Murray State's Hunter Ford for second
place.
It was Painter's highest career finish, and his first
all-tournament honor. He had two top 10 efforts last year, with his
previous highest showing being sixth place at the Pizza
Hut/Bellsouth Invitational.
Murray State (868) was able to hold on to win the team title by 10
strokes over Guilford College (878). Belmont Abbey and Elon
fashioned the best team scores of the final round at 283, jumping
into a tie for third place at 880, while James Madison finished
fifth at 886.
Wofford (886) was sixth, one shot ahead of the Golden Eagles (887),
with Appalachian State (888) one stroke back. The field included 18
teams and 96 total golfers.
Senior John Fox also closed the tournament with a round of 72
Sunday, and finished in a tie for 23rd place at 221. Junior Wes
Korth (226) tied for 47th, followed by Josh Simer (229) in 57th
place and Jake Heatherly (231) in 66th.
Tech was a late addition to the field at the Sea Trail tournament,
after first-year coach Craig King was forced to make a scheduling
switch when the Jackson State National was canceled due to poor
weather. It was the first event under King, who was named head
coach in the summer.
The Golden Eagles (11-6) return to action Monday and Tuesday at the
Murray State Invitational.
