NEWPORT, Ky. - Tech's first true road match of the 2013 campaign went down to the wire, but a late Northern Kentucky goal spoiled the Golden Eagles' bid at their first victory of the season. Scoreless through 83 minutes of action, Norse senior Allison Ponzer found the back of the net in the 84th minute to send Tech (0-4-0) to the eventual 1-0 defeat.
Fellow NKU (1-2-1) senior Megan Frye set up the winning score thanks to a beautiful cross in the waning moments of the intense affair, giving Frye the contest's lone assist of the match. Ponzer took care of the rest with her first goal of the young season, tapping it past the try of Golden Eagle goalkeeper Jordan Brown.
Despite allowing the winner, Brown came up big once again for Tech. The sophomore from League City, Texas eclipsed double-digit saves for the second time in four tilts this year, recording 10 stops to give her an impressive 37 on the season.
Brown was tested throughout the course of the second stanza, as Northern Kentucky fired 16 shots in the final 45 minutes, outshooting Tech 16-1 during the half. The Golden Eagles won the first period shooting battle, 9-8.
Across the pitch, NKU sophomore keeper Tanner Ruberg made two halts in her shutout effort, but was also aided by an additional three team saves.
Tech senior forward Ellie Iaciofano led the Golden Eagles with three total shots, two of which were on-goal, while the Norse's Casey McMillian earned the match-high with seven shots and four shots-on-goal.
Tech will remain on the road for its next affair, traveling to the University of Findlay on Friday, Sep. 6. The match will mark the first of the year for the Oilers, with action slated to begin at 4 p.m. CDT.
