DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Tennessee Tech soccer team, which has scored in the first six minutes of its previous two matches, had the tables turned on it Sunday afternoon when Davidson scored in the sixth minute and defeated the Golden Eagles 2-0.
"We came out flat," said head coach Daniel Brizard. "We played 110 minutes on Friday and they [Davidson] didn't, so they had some fresh legs. We gave up the early goal, which is something you can't do against a team like that. We tried to do everything we could to recover."
The Wildcats made things difficult during the match, allowing Tech just four shots, and none of them on goal. Julia Singley scored early, forcing the Golden Eagles to play from behind the entire match. Tori Krause added to the lead later in the half as Tech spent much of the match on the defensive side of the ball trying to prevent another Davidson goal.
Freshman goalkeeper Jordan Brown, who had eight saves in Friday's match against High Point, made a career-high nine saves throughout the match.
"She looked fantastic," said Brizard. "Davidson got in behind a couple times and she came up with some really fine saves. We're going to expect a mistake or two since she is a freshman and she's still learning. But she's one of the big differences on why we're not 0-4 on the season."
The defense, which was attacked early and often, saw 23 shots thrown its way throughout the contest. Despite the brutal attack by the Wildcats offense, which recorded 18 more shots after the second goal, the Golden Eagles didn't allow a goal after the 26th minute.
Brown stopped the final seven shots-on-goal she faced.
The Golden Eagles will return to action on Friday, August 31 when they return home for a match against Northern Kentucky. Game-time is set for 3 p.m. CT. Tech will then hit the road on Sunday for a 1 p.m. contest against new SEC member, Missouri.
"We're looking to learn from this weekend and bring it back home," said Brizard. "Hopefully we draw a good crowd and get a win against Northern Kentucky and head up to Mizzou at 2-2-1. I think we can do it."
