Golden Eagles can't find offense in OVC opener

CHARLESTON, Ill. – Tennessee Tech had its chances, but couldn't generate enough offense to get past Eastern Illinois in a 2-0 loss in Friday's Ohio Valley Conference opener for both squads.

The Golden Eagles will get a chance to even their league record at 1-1 when they take on Southern Illinois-Edwardsville at 1 p.m. Sunday in Edwardsville, Ill.

On Friday, Eastern Illinois broke a scoreless tie with a goal in the 33rd minute to snatch an early lead. Brenna Vogel fired a shot from 25 yards out that sailed over the goalkeeper's head and into the back of the net.

The Golden Eagles held the Panthers scoreless for the rest of the half, but couldn't put any points on the board themselves, despite winning several corner kick opportunities.

Eastern Illinois extended its lead to 2-0 in the 59th minute when Ashley Eck sent a shot from the right side into the left corner of Tennessee Tech's net. Eck was assisted on the play by Kristin Germann and Jade Schwarting.

Tech finished the match with nine shots, three of which were on goal. EIU took 17 shots and placed seven on goal while winning seven corners compared to four for the Golden Eagles.

Golden Eagle sophomore goalkeeper Becca Toler notched five saves on the evening while Eastern Illinois' Brittany O'Dell stopped three.

Freshman Amanda Koch and juniors Leigh Heffner and Kris Cambron each placed a shot on goal for Tech.
