Golden Eagles can't come back from early deficit, fall 1-0

Heffner, Reid, Reed named to all-tournament team

JACKSONVILLE, Ala. – An early New Mexico State goal in the eighth minute was enough to lift the Aggies to a 1-0 victory over Tennessee Tech Sunday at the Adidas Gamecock Soccer Classic at Jacksonville State.

Through 200 minutes of soccer at the tournament this weekend, the Golden Eagle defense held its opponents to just one goal. That one goal on Sunday, however, proved costly.

Mary Kate Koziol put New Mexico State on the board with 8:19 on the clock on an unassisted strike from 30 yards out, lifting the Aggies to a 4-2 record on the season while Tech fell to 2-3-1.

The Golden Eagles limited New Mexico State to six shots on goal on the afternoon while taking four themselves. The Aggies outshot Tech 11-6 overall and won four corner kicks compared to the Golden Eagles' three.

Tech goalkeeper Becca Toler played all 90 minutes and notched five saves while New Mexico State keeper Erin Wosick collected four saves and earned the shutout.

Midfielder Shannon Rountree accounted for two of Tech's shots on goals, whilemidfielder Jacquie Watkins and forward Sarah Gawthrop each contributed one.

The meeting was the first ever between the two schools.

Tennessee Tech had three players named to the all-tournament team for their performances against NMSU Sunday and in a 0-0 tie against Louisiana Tech on Friday  -- senior Lindsey Reed and juniors Leigh Heffner and Kerri Reid.

The Golden Eagles return to action with a road swing to Virginia next weekend, where they will play at Longwood on Friday, Sept. 9 and Radford on Sunday, Sept. 11.
