Tech track wraps up Tennessee Challange

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee Tech track and field team wrapped up competition at the 2015 Tennessee Challenge, hosted by the University of Tennessee Knoxville, on Saturday. This was the final preparatory meet for the Golden Eagles prior to heading to the Ohio Valley Conference meet on May 15 and 16.

Junior Tiara Hymon set two career-best marks on the track on Saturday. In the 100m-dash, Hymon hit a PR of 12.35 seconds, and in the 200m-race, the Memphis, Tenn., native crossed the line in 25.44.

Also running the 100m-dash was sophomore Brittany McGee, junior Atlanta Westbrook, and freshman Kayla Turange. McGee followed Hymon across the line in a time of 12.89, while Westbrook was on her heels in with a time of 12.96. Turange crossed in a personal-best time of 12.98.

In the 200m race, following Hymon was Westbrook, who also recorded a career-best time. Westbrook crossed the finish line in a time of 26.02. Following her was senior Brooklyn Kimball who finished in a time of 26.37. Turange and McGee also ran career-bests in the 200m-race. Turange crossed in 26.77, and McGee followed in 26.82.

Kimball was the sole TTU competitor in the 400m-race, and she finished in a time 58.79.

In the 800m-run, freshmen Madison Stremler, Priscah Jemeli, and Katie O'Neill, and junior Landry Loving finished the race within a few seconds of each other. Stremler led the way with a time of 2:19.84, Jemeli followed with a time of 2:24.36. O'Neill ran a time of 2:30.88, and Loving crossed in a time of 2:32.12.

Freshman Sonel Bezuidenhout wrapped up the running events with an 11:24.21 in the 3000m-run.

In the field events, Westbrook hit a mark of 37-11.25 in the triple jump. In the throws, sophomore Makayla Kington hit a career-best 117-01 in the discus, and also hit a mark of 79-02 in the Javelin. Senior Ashley Lowe also hit a PR in the discus with a mark of 115-05, while launching a throw of 118-03 in the hammer throw. Sophomore Jaelyn Todd hit a mark of 103-01 in the discus.

The Golden Eagles will have a weekend off before heading to the Ohio Valley Conference Outdoor Championships on May 15 and 16.
