COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee Tech women’s track
& field team will be seeking improvements in personal
performances this weekend when they join a talented group of 24
teams (13 women's teams and 11 men's teams) that will compete at
the Commodore Invitational, hosted by Vanderbilt University. Action
starts Friday night at 5 p.m., and continues Saturday throughout
the day.
The meet will have a Tennessee flavor, with seven teams
from the Volunteer state scheduled to participate including the
Golden Eagles. Tennessee squads in the field include Belmont,
Lipscomb, Memphis, Middle Tennessee, Tennessee, Tennessee State,
and Vanderbilt.
This weekend will also feature a solid group of out-of-state
visitors, too, including four SEC teams. In addition to the
Tennessee teams, the field includes Mississippi, Mississippi State,
South Alabama, UAB (women), Wake Forest and Western Kentucky.
The Golden Eagles opened the season last weekend at the UAB Blazer Indoor Invitational, as several newcomers established collegiate personal best marks in their first action. Returning members of the squad set four new personal-best marks.
Brooklyn Kimball was the lone runner with a personal-best that topped her previous time, running a 27.10 in the 200-meter dash.
The other marks came in field events, with one in the triple
jump and two in throwing events. Atlanta
Westbrook established a new PR in the triple jump with a leap
of 36 feet, one inch. In the shot put, Makayla
Kington had a PR with a toss of 35 feet, six inches, and in the
weight throw it was Jaelyn Todd with
a PR heave of 32 feet, six inches.
True freshman Lera McNamara
had the highest individual finish in the meet for the Golden
Eagles. She placed seventh in the 5,000-meter run with a time of
21:01.96. Tech also got a Top 10 showing the same event from
freshman Baylee
Balgemann, who placed 10th in 21:40.30.
The Commodore Invitational will feature about 400 athletes, and
coach Wayne Angel said the goal of his team is to build each
weekend throughout the season.
“Last weekend was the first meet for many of our kids, and
they got a taste of collegiate track & field,” he said.
“This weekend, it’s more of the same. The competition
might be better, but they have now experienced it and that should
help them as they strive to improve."
Complete results of the meet will be posted on TTUsports.com when
the meet is finished.
