Tech drops a pair of road contests at Southeast Missouri

Cape Girardeau, Mo. – The Southeast Missouri bats were out in force as they thwarted the Golden Eagles in their first two OVC road contests of the season.

The Redhawks dealt the Golden Eagles a 4-1 loss in game one of Saturday's doubleheader.

Despite the 4-1 loss, hitting was at a premium throughout as both teams managed just four hits each. SEMO was able to break through in the bottom of the third as they scored four runs, all of which came with two outs, to go up 4-0.

Tech managed one run in the top of the fifth off a sacrifice fly from junior Lacie Coquerille, but that was all the Golden Eagle offense could muster, as the Redhawks kept Tech off the scoreboard in the final two innings to complete the 4-1 victory.

SEMO's Shea Cothren earned the win as she pitched five innings, giving up one run on four Golden Eagles hits. Junior Holly Thomas (7-4) shouldered the loss as she gave up four runs, on four hits and four walks, while fanning five.

The Redhawks kept their momentum going in game two, as they took the 6-3 decision, behind two three-run innings in the first and the third inning. All six SEMO runs came at the expense of junior Whitney Cummings, who fell to 4-4 on the season.

The Tech offense managed two runs in the second inning off of three hits, and one in the fourth on a solo home run off the bat of sophomore Melody Christian.

The Golden Eagles last threat came in the fifth as they loaded the bases, but were not able to get a run across the plate as pitcher Alora Marble got out of the jam. Tech managed just one base runner in the final two innings as Marble earned her first save of the season as she pitched 3.1 shutout innings.

The Golden Eagles (11-10, 2-3 OVC) wrap up their three-game series with the Redhawks Sunday, at 1 p.m.
