COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – The inaugural NCAA Student-Athlete Leadership Forum will take place this week in Orlando, Fla., and Tennessee Tech will send softball player Lacie Coquerille and Lloyd Harris from the tennis team.
Coordinator of Compliance and Special Events Mandy Thatcher will attend as Tech’s faculty representative.
“I’m excited for the trip to Orlando,”
Coquerille said. “”It’s an honor to be selected
out of all of the student-athletes at Tech and I’m grateful
for the opportunity.”
Coquerille is now in her fourth season as a member of the
Golden Eagle softball team. During her three seasons she has
received numerous academic awards including two CoSIDA Academic
All-District awards and has been named to TTU’s Athletic
Director Honor Roll and the OVC Commissioner’s Honor Roll
every semester she has been a member of the Golden Eagle
squad.
Harris enters his fourth season as a member of the tennis
team; a season removed from finishing 10-4 in singles play and 12-8
in doubles matches. Off the court, he has earned three OVC
Commissioner Honor Roll nods and has been named to the Tech AD
Honor Roll for every semester he has been a Golden Eagle.
“It is a honor to be selected,” Harris said.
“I’m really looking forward to interacting with all of
the other student-athletes who will be in Orlando.”
Thatcher will join Coquerille and Harris in Orlando as the
Tennessee Tech faculty member and had the task of selecting
Coquerille and Harris to make the trip.
“We needed to select athletes with on and off the field
success and that is something both Lacie and Lloyd have been able
to do over the last three years,” Thatcher said.
The purpose of the Student-Athlete Leadership Forum is to
enhance personal awareness and leadership skills needed to impact
the development of student-athletes.
At the forum, student-athletes will discuss issues
affecting college athletes today, assess behavioral styles to
enhance communication and leadership, and gain a better
understanding of the NCAA.
Student-athletes should leave the forum with better
communication skills among athletes, coaches and administrators and
gain ideas on how to improve their campus.
To be able to attend this event a student-athlete must have
participated in an NCAA-sponsored sport during the 2010-11 season,
and must have a good academic standing within their
institution’s requirements. All participants must also show
strong leadership qualities as well.
