COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee Tech softball team enjoyed some home cooking as it opened its 2011 home schedule with wins over in-state rival Middle Tennessee and NC State at the Tech Combat Classic.
The Golden Eagles started the day with a 6-0 victory over
MTSU, riding the shoulders of junior pitcher Holly Thomas as she
pitched seven shutout innings, en route to her fifth victory of the
season. Thomas allowed just three hits on the day, while striking
out seven, for her third shutout of the season.
The Tech offense broke the game open in the in the second
inning, as the Golden Eagles scored four runs, including three off
of RBI singles, to put Tech up 4-0.
Sophomore Melody Christian, who recorded three hits and three
RBI, drove in a Tech run in the fourth and sixth innings to put
Tech up 6-0. Sophomore Brittany Spalding crossed the plate three
times.
Tech finished day one of the Tech Combat Classic with a 3-1
win over NC State.
Junior Whitney Cummings earned her second victory of the
season, as she pitched seven innings, while giving up one run and
striking out five.
The Golden Eagles opened up the scoring in the third inning
scoring a pair of runs off of three hits and one Wolfpack error.
Tech added an insurance run off the bat of sophomore Chanelle
Spalding to increase its lead to 3-0.
NC State managed to score on run in the top of the seventh,
but Cummings held firm as she completed her first game of the
season for a 3-1 Golden Eagle victory.
Tech (7-7) hosts Belmont and Louisville in day two of the Tech
Combat Classic Saturday. Game times are set for 12:30 and 3
p.m.
