NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Facing off against its third "Power 4" opponent to start the season, the Tennessee Tech tennis team was downed 7-0 by Vanderbilt in Thursday night's meeting in Music City.
Straight-set singles victories were the theme by the Commodores (2-0) behind two-set wins in all six solo matchups. Danil Panarin knocked off Alex Alvarez 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 1 position, while Michael Ross secured a 6-2, 6-3 decision against Murilo Burckhardt in the No. 2 battle and Pablo Martinez Gomez notched a 6-2, 6-3 win over Oliver Dao in the No. 3 position.
The Golden Eagles (0-3) found a similar fate toward the bottom of the lineup as well, starting with a Henry Ruger 6-1, 6-0 nod against Lucas Bitzer in the No. 4 slot. Callum Markowitz followed suit thanks to a 6-1, 6-2 triumph over Davids Spaks, while Tighe Brunetti collected a 6-3, 6-0 victory against Darek Kuczynski in the No. 6 affair.
As far as doubles play is concerned, Ross and Ruger picked up a 6-0 triumph over Bitzer and Spaks in the No. 1 position to go along with a 6-2 Charlap and Markowitz win against Dao and Kuczynski to secure the point.
The No. 3 clash pitting Gomez Martinez and Panarin against Alvarez and Burckhardt did not finish.
Tech will now set its sights on a Jan. 24 match against Austin Peay, slated to take place in Bowling Green, Ky.
