COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee Tech tennis team is ready to take aim in its lone match of the week as the Golden Eagles will renew their in-state rivalry with Austin Peay on Friday, Jan. 24. The match will be a neutral-site affair, slated to take place in Bowling Green, Ky.

TTU's meeting with its former OVC foe will mark the club's first match against a non- "Power 4" opponent after the purple and gold opened the 2025 campaign with three straight contests against teams from the ACC and SEC.

The Golden Eagles (0-3) officially unwrapped up the season with a 7-0 defeat at No. 4 Wake Forest on Jan. 12, before falling 7-0 a day later to No. 13 Tennessee in Tech's second tussle of the season. The Golden Eagles concluded their busy season-opening stretch that saw them play three matches in five days with a 7-0 loss at Vanderbilt on Jan. 16.

Alex Alvarez is responsible for Tech's lone singles set triumph behind a second-set 6-1 victory against Alan Jesudason of Tennessee in the match on Jan. 13. The Golden Eagle sophomore out of Barcelona, Spain is in his second season draped in purple and gold following a rookie campaign in which Alvarez earned All-Horizon League second team accolades.

Tech was recently selected to finish third in the Horizon League's South Division.

Unlike the Golden Eagles, the Govs have yet to open their 2025 season. The club's matchup with Tech will mark its first clash of the year, and be part of a busy weekend that will see Austin Peay travel to Belmont on Saturday for a second-straight tilt with a Horizon League opponent.

The Governors are coming off a challenging 2024 campaign in which they posted a 5-13 overall record with an 0-9 Atlantic Sun account.

Inside the series

Former members of the same conference, Tech's tangle with Austin Peay will mark the 74th get-together in the all-time series. The Golden Eagles lead the set 48-25, which includes winning seven consecutive meetings. TTU claimed the last showdown behind a 6-1 victory on Apr. 19, 2022 in the final faceoff as members of the same league.
