COOKEVILLE, Tenn. -- One of these teams will walk out of Tucker
Stadium thursday night with their first notch in the win column for
2010.
Tennessee Tech hosts Lane College for the first meeting between
the two schools, and both squads are searching for their initial
win of the year. The Golden Eagles are 0-2 following losses at No.
17 Arkansas and No. 4 Texas Christian University.
Lane College, meanwhile, has gone 0-3 in the first three weeks of
the season under first-year coach Derrick Burroughs. The Dragons
dropped a home game to Clark Atlanta, followed by road losses at
Kentucky State and Morehead.
While the contest marks the third consecutive road tilt for Lane,
it’s the first home game of the year in Tucker Stadium for
the Golden Eagles. Tech went 5-0 at home last year and brings that
five-game home winning streak into the Thursday night contest.
Tech has not lost a home opener in three seasons under coach
Watson Brown, posting wins over Cumberland, Gardner-Webb and
Pikeville. In fact, the Golden Eagles have won 11 of their last 12
home openers, falling only to Chattanooga in 2006 during that
span.
Tech is looking for consistency in two key areas -- turnovers and
penalties.
After playing the entire Arkansas game without a turnover, the
Golden Eagles lost the ball five times at TCU.
Conversely, after being flagged for 11 penalties at Arkansas, the
Golden Eagles were called for just four penalties at TCU.
The game is Tech’s final non-conference outing of the year
before charging into Ohio Valley Conference play next week at
Southeast Missouri, the first of eight consecutive OVC encounters.
