Watson Brown: Football team making good progress in spring drills

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. -- Spring camp may just be a week in, but Tennessee Tech football coach Watson Brown is pleased with the team's progress in the first five sessions out of the 15 allowed.

"Camp's going well," Brown said. "We're five days in, so we're one-third of the way. We're still installing things and trying to get everything in. I think the key to the spring is getting to watch the personnel. As we said going in, we've got 53 guys that have kind of established themselves on the depth chart that are back, then we have another 30-35 that we are really watching to see who can pop in and help us. We're also trying to get those 53 better. I think we're off to a good start. We're getting to judge those guys and that's the important part. We still need some help in spots."

One of the things that is helping the Golden Eagles is a lack of major injuries.

"For the most part, we're pretty healthy," Brown said. "We've got some pulled hamstrings, but other than that we're fairly healthy."

There haven't really been any surprises for the veteran coach through the first five sessions.

"I wouldn't say anything has just popped out," Brown said. "The things we wanted to see are coming through. Our young quarterbacks have been impressive -- Darian Stone and Ryan Tilghman both have done some really good things when they're getting reps. Adam Urbano has come in and I think he's going to be the running back we thought he could be and he's going to be a solid player with the two returning running backs we have."
