Purple team takes Game 1 of Purple and Gold Series 6-2


COOKEVILLE, Tenn. The Tennessee Tech baseball team played its first of a five-game mock "world series" Tuesday afternoon, with members of the Golden Eagle squad taking on each other following a Monday evening draft by the senior members of the team.

The Purple squad, coached by assistant coach Cody Church, defeated the Grey team, coached by assistant coach Brandon Turner. Team Gray actually grabbed the first run of the game when junior infielder Daniel Miles singled in junior first baseman Zach Stephens in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Team Purple would go on to score five unanswered runs in the top sixth, beginning with an RBI triple by sophomore outfielder Jake Rowland. The squad would go on to defeat the Grey team 6-2.

Four Purple players gathered two hits in the game inlcuding freshman outfielder Tyler Brazelton, sophomore infielder Dylan Bosheers, sophomore first baseman Albert DelGaicco, and freshman infielder Charles Matsunami. DelGaicco also added two RBI to lead the purple squad to victory.

Junior right hander Jacob Honea pitched a spectacular game for the Purple squad, lasting five innings and striking out three while allowing just four hits and one run. Senior righty Zane Morton and junior righty Stanton Taylor both pitched two innings in relief each. Each allowed just one base hit. Morton struck out two batters while Taylor recorded three strikeouts.

Game 2 of the Purple and Gold Series will be played Thursday, Nov. 1 at approximately 2:30 p.m. CT on the Quillen Field at Bush Stadium.
